Buying your first Jaipur Metro ticket takes about 2 minutes. But knowing which ticket type to get - and when to switch from tokens to a Smart Card - can save you a meaningful amount over a multi-day stay. This guide covers every ticket option, how each one works at the gate, and which makes sense for your trip.
The Three Ticket Types
Jaipur Metro offers three ways to pay for travel. Each suits a different kind of rider.
1. Token (Single Journey)
A token is a small plastic coin you buy at the ticket counter or vending machine for one specific journey. The fare is distance-based: ₹10 for short hops (1-2 stations), up to ₹30 for the full line. You tap the token on the gate sensor to enter, carry it through your journey, then drop it into the slot at the exit gate. If you lose it before exiting, you pay a ₹50 penalty at the customer service window.
Tokens are the right choice if you're riding once or twice and don't want to carry a card. No registration, no deposit, no commitment.
2. Smart Card (Reloadable)
The Smart Card is a reloadable contactless card, similar to a metro card in any major city. It costs ₹50 as a refundable deposit, and you load a minimum of ₹100 balance when you first buy it. Every time you ride, the fare is automatically deducted from your balance - and you get a 10% discount on every journey compared to the token price.
The card works by tapping in at the entry gate and tapping out at the exit. Your balance is checked on exit, and the correct fare is deducted. If your balance drops below the minimum fare, the gate won't open - top it up at any ticket counter before your next journey.
Reloading is done at any station ticket counter. You can add ₹100 to ₹1,000 in a single transaction. Cards can also be reloaded online at JMRC's website using net banking or UPI.
3. Tourist Card (Unlimited Travel)
The Tourist Card is designed for visitors making multiple journeys in a day or across a few days. Two variants are available:
- 1-day card: ₹150 - Unlimited travel for one calendar day. Includes a ₹50 refundable deposit, so the actual travel value is ₹100.
- 3-day card: ₹250 - Unlimited travel for three consecutive days. Includes a ₹50 refundable deposit, so the travel value is ₹200.
Tourist Cards break even after 4-5 journeys on the 1-day card, and after 7-8 journeys on the 3-day card. If you're doing a full day of sightseeing with multiple metro legs, the 1-day card almost always works out cheaper than buying individual tokens.
How to Buy Each Ticket Type
All three ticket types are available at the manned ticket counter inside any station. Token vending machines accept ₹10, ₹20, ₹50 and ₹100 notes plus coins. The machines display fares for each destination - select your destination, insert cash, and collect your token. Smart Cards and Tourist Cards are only available at the manned counter, not the vending machines.
Discounts and Concessions
Jaipur Metro offers concessions for several groups:
- Smart Card holders: 10% off every journey automatically
- Students: 15% off with valid student ID - available on Smart Card only
- Senior citizens: 25% off with government-issued age proof
- Persons with disabilities: 50% off with disability certificate
- Children below 90 cm: Free travel, no ticket needed
- Children 90 cm to 130 cm: Half fare
Concession fares apply on Smart Cards only - not on tokens or Tourist Cards. Visit the ticket counter with your supporting document to register the concession on your card.
Which Ticket Should You Get?
- 1-2 journeys total: Token. No setup needed.
- 3-5 journeys over 1-2 days: Tourist Card (1-day) or Smart Card - both roughly equal.
- 6+ journeys or staying 3+ days: Smart Card. The 10% discount adds up quickly and you get your ₹50 deposit back when you return the card.
- Full-day sightseeing with 4+ rides: Tourist Card (1-day). Simplest option, no mental math required.
Refunding and Returning Your Smart Card
When you're done with your Smart Card, take it to any ticket counter. The remaining balance plus the ₹50 deposit will be refunded in cash. You'll need to show the same ID you used when you bought the card. Refunds are processed immediately at the counter - no waiting period.

- →If you're visiting for 2+ days, get a Smart Card - the 10% discount more than covers the ₹50 deposit
- →Tourist Cards are sold at the manned counter only, not at vending machines - go to the counter first
- →Keep your Smart Card away from other contactless cards in your wallet - they can interfere at the gate
- →Check your balance before the last train of the day - low balance blocks the entry gate
- →Return your Smart Card before leaving Jaipur to get your ₹50 deposit back in cash
