Riding Jaipur Metro for the first time feels a little daunting - you're at the counter, there's a queue behind you, and you're not entirely sure whether to buy a token or a smart card. This guide cuts through that uncertainty and walks you through every step, from walking into the station to stepping off at your destination.
Understanding the Pink Line
Jaipur Metro currently operates one line - the Pink Line - running 12 km from Mansarovar in the west to Chandpole in the east. There are 11 stations in total. The line passes through Sitapura Industrial Area (southern spur) and the main corridor through Civil Lines, New Gate, Chandpole and Badi Chaupar. Trains run between 5:30 AM and 10:30 PM every day, with departures every 5–7 minutes during peak hours and every 10–12 minutes off-peak.
Step 1: Getting to the Station
All Jaipur Metro stations are marked with a bright pink "M" board. The two busiest entry points for tourists are Chandpole (near the old city markets) and Civil Lines (near the bus stand). Most stations have auto-rickshaw and e-rickshaw stands just outside the main entrance.
Step 2: Buying Your Ticket
You have three options at the counter:
- Token (single journey) - a small plastic coin. Minimum fare ₹10, maximum ₹30. Tap it at the entry gate, keep it, and drop it into the exit gate slot at your destination.
- Smart Card - a reloadable card. Costs ₹50 deposit + minimum ₹100 balance. Gives 10% off every fare. Best if you're staying in Jaipur for more than 2–3 days.
- Tourist Card - ₹150 for 1-day unlimited travel or ₹250 for 3-day. Great value if you plan to visit multiple spots in one day.
Token machines accept ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, and ₹100 notes as well as coins. Staff at the manned counter can help if the machine gives you trouble.
Step 3: Going Through Security
Jaipur Metro has airport-style security. Men and women pass through separate scanning queues. Put your bag on the X-ray belt, walk through the metal detector arch, collect your bag. The whole process takes about 30 seconds when it's not crowded.
Step 4: Tapping In
Hold your token, smart card, or QR code against the round sensor on the fare gate. The gate opens, you walk through. The green light means you're good. If you get a red light, step aside and speak to the staff booth - it usually means the token wasn't read properly.
Step 5: Finding Your Platform
All Jaipur Metro stations have two platform directions clearly signed: towards Mansarovar (west) and towards Chandpole (east). Look at the direction board and check which end of the line your destination is on. There's a route map pasted on every platform wall and inside every train carriage.
Step 6: Boarding the Train
Stand behind the yellow line. Doors open at marked positions. Wait for passengers to get off before stepping on - this keeps boarding quick. The first and last carriage have dedicated women-only sections marked with pink boards. Mixed carriages are in between.
Step 7: During the Ride
Station names are announced in Hindi and English before each stop. There are also digital display boards inside the carriage showing the next station. If you miss your stop, ride to the next one and catch a return train - there's no extra charge as long as you exit at the correct destination on a single journey token.
Step 8: Exiting the Station
Tap or insert your token at the exit gate. Smart card holders tap out the same way they tapped in. If your balance is too low, you'll be directed to the customer service window to top up before exiting. After the gate, follow signs for auto-rickshaw stands, buses, or street exits.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Don't buy a token for the wrong direction - check the destination board before joining the queue.
- Don't eat or drink on the platform or inside the train. Fines are enforced.
- Don't keep your token loose in a pocket with coins - the gate won't read it properly.
- Don't block the doors when they're closing. Trains run on a tight schedule.
