Leaving something on a train is surprisingly common - phones slide under seats, bags are forgotten in the overhead rack, and wallets go missing in the rush to exit. The good news: Jaipur Metro has a decent process for recovering lost items, and CCTV footage helps staff locate items quickly when they know where to look. Acting fast is the key.
Step 1: Realise and Act Immediately
If you realise you've left something on the train while still at the station, don't go through the exit gate. Return to the platform immediately and speak to any station staff member. If the train hasn't left yet, staff may be able to hold the doors briefly or contact the driver to secure your item. In practice, this works best within 2–3 minutes of the train arriving at the station.
Step 2: Report to the Station Help Desk
Every station has a help desk staffed during operating hours. This is your first stop for all lost property enquiries. When you approach the desk, give them:
- Your approximate travel time and direction (Mansarovar-bound or Chandpole-bound)
- The station you boarded and the station where you think you left the item
- A description of the item - colour, brand, approximate size, any identifying marks
- Your contact number for follow-up
The desk staff log your report and radio the end-of-line station (where trains are cleaned and inspected between runs). Items found during cleaning are sent to the Central Lost and Found desk.
Step 3: The Central Lost and Found Desk
Jaipur Metro's primary Lost and Found desk operates at the Civil Lines station (the main administrative hub of the system). It is open during all operating hours: 5:30 AM to 10:30 PM. If your item is found, it will typically be brought here within 2–4 hours of the next train cleaning cycle.
To claim your item in person, bring:
- A valid photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, driving licence)
- A description matching the item (serial numbers, photos if you have them)
- The reference number from your lost property report (given at the station help desk)
Step 4: Remote Reporting and Follow-Up
If you've already left the station when you realise something is missing, call the JMRC customer helpline. Give them the same details you'd give the help desk in person. A reference number will be issued. Staff at each station check the Lost and Found log when items are found and will call your number if your description matches something recovered.
What Gets Found vs. What Doesn't
Items left in the overhead storage rack or in the wheelchair space areas are found at a high rate - they're visible during the end-of-route cleaning inspection. Items that fall under seats are less consistently found, though the cleaning crew does sweep under seats. Valuable small items (phones, wallets) that are found are handed to station staff immediately - they don't stay on the train for long.
How Long Are Items Held?
Jaipur Metro holds unclaimed items for 30 days from the date of recovery. After 30 days, items are transferred to the Railway Police Force (RPF) and may be auctioned or disposed of according to government property rules. Perishable items are disposed of sooner. Documents (passports, tickets, IDs) are treated with priority and held for 90 days due to their sensitivity.
Preventing Loss in the First Place
- Attach a luggage tag with your name and phone number to bags you're checking into overhead storage.
- Keep valuables in a bag that stays on your person rather than in overhead storage.
- Do a quick "phone, wallet, keys" check every time you stand to exit the train.
- If travelling with children, assign one adult specifically to bag management while another manages the children.
