Every metro system has rules, but knowing them in advance saves you from the awkward moment at security when your bag gets flagged. Jaipur Metro's rules are straightforward and mostly common sense, but a few specifics (like luggage size limits and the photography policy) catch travellers off guard. Here is the full picture.
Prohibited Items You Cannot Carry
The security scanner at every station entrance checks for these prohibited items. If found, you will be asked to dispose of the item or leave it with security (uncollected items are not held indefinitely).
- Weapons: Firearms, ammunition, knives with blades over 6 cm, swords, batons, pepper spray
- Explosives and flammable materials: Firecrackers, petrol, kerosene, lighter fluid, gas cylinders, matchboxes in bulk
- Chemicals: Acids, bleach, industrial solvents, compressed gas containers
- Alcohol: Open or sealed bottles of alcohol are not permitted on trains or platforms
- Drugs and narcotics: Any illegal substance
- Large tools: Hammers, crowbars, heavy wrenches, and similar construction tools
Items that are commonly flagged but usually allowed after inspection include Swiss Army knives with blades under 6 cm, nail clippers, small scissors (under 6 cm blade), and disposable lighters (one per person).
Luggage Weight and Size Limits
Jaipur Metro allows passengers to carry luggage within these limits:
- Maximum weight: 25 kg per person
- Maximum dimensions: 60 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm (roughly standard airline cabin bag size)
- Excess or oversized luggage: Bags larger than the standard limit may be allowed at the discretion of station staff, but they must be kept near the carriage doors and must not block the aisle
In practice, standard suitcases (check-in size up to 70 cm height) are routinely carried without issue. Very large trunks, furniture, or commercial goods will be refused entry. Trolley bags should be collapsed before boarding.
Food and Drink Rules
Eating and drinking are prohibited on the platform and inside the train. This includes snacks, chewing gum, and beverages. Water bottles are allowed to be carried but should not be used while on the platform or in the carriage. The rule is enforced through announcements and occasional checks. Fines for eating or drinking on the metro are ₹200.
Food stalls at major stations (Civil Lines, Chandpole) are located in the concourse area before the fare gates. Eat before entering the paid zone.
Photography and Video Rules
Personal photography (selfies, tourist photos) with mobile phones and compact cameras is generally tolerated at stations and on trains. Professional photography with tripods, studio lighting, or commercial equipment requires prior written permission from JMRC. Drone operation is completely prohibited on metro property.
Video recording for personal use (travel vlogs, social media clips) is permitted as long as it does not obstruct other passengers or interfere with operations. Commercial filming requires JMRC approval and typically involves a location fee.
Behaviour Rules on the Train
- No smoking: Smoking is banned at all metro stations and on trains. Fine: ₹200
- No spitting: Spitting on platforms, stairs, or inside trains is a finable offence. Fine: ₹200
- No loud music: Playing music or videos without headphones is prohibited. Use earphones
- No begging or hawking: Selling goods, begging, or distributing leaflets is not allowed
- No sitting on the floor: Passengers must use designated seating. Sitting or lying on the floor is not permitted
- Priority seating: Blue-marked priority seats must be vacated for senior citizens, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities when asked
Women's Coach Rules
The first carriage of every train is reserved for women passengers at all hours (not just peak hours). Men found in the women's coach may be asked to move by staff or fellow passengers. Children below 12 years travelling with a female guardian may use the women's coach. There is no penalty for accidentally entering the women's coach, but repeated refusal to move when asked can result in a fine.
Pet and Animal Policy
Pets are not allowed on Jaipur Metro with one exception: certified guide dogs and service animals accompanying passengers with disabilities. Pet carriers, cages, and leashed animals are all prohibited. If you are travelling with a service animal, inform station staff on entry so they can facilitate smooth boarding.
Fine Schedule for Common Violations
- Travelling without a valid ticket: ₹250
- Eating or drinking on platform or train: ₹200
